Centre for Total Development (CTD) a rural based voluntary organization of Hooghly District, West Bengal was established in 1987 situated at Village:-Jigra, P.O:-Bahirkhand, Dist:-Hooghly, West Bengal, Pin No:-712405 under Society Registration Act, Govt of West Bengal, FCRA Registration, IT PAN, 12A+80G, TDS-(TAN), P.Tax Registration, PF Registration and NITI AYOG Registration. The organization was established under guidance of a veteran social worker Mr. M.G.Bhattacharya. The organization started walking by holding hands with Mr.Bhattacharyya who was in a leading point at that time. During initial years much could not be done due to paucity of fund except purchase of a plot of land, construction of a mud house, running a pre-school centre, running poultry and undertaking some awareness generation programs. Then the organization overcame the huge obstacles and unequal paths during its long journey.

As it has been mentioned earlier that in Tarakeswar Block, there is intensive area and extensive area. From Dakatia Khal of Bagbari to Chaulpatti Morh of Tarakeswar, it is intensive area wherein 1000 downtrodden families and the children who are deprived, excluded and vulnerable, reside by road side, railway track side, canal side etc. and get all sort of services. The organization is also trying to giving more focus to community based protection mechanism, create a child friendly environment and to bring a drastic and positive changes into the lives of the children and their families and lasting it.
Target GroupThe target group of CTD is always downtrodden people and specially the deprived, excluded and vulnerable children of rural area mainly (Some Villages of Baligori GP-1 & 2) though partially Tarakeswar Municipality area is being covered. However focus is on child and women – be it rural or urban and they always belonging to oppressed and underprivileged section of the society.
Strength of the Organization
CTD is committed to reduce the maternal mortality ratio and providing universal access to reproductive health. Awareness generation on maternal and child health is a major responsibility and fundamental importance, to ensure utilization of various programmes implemented by the organization. Mental Health awareness - Need of the hour According to World Health Organization, by the year 2020, depression constitutes the second largest disease burden worldwide. The social and economic costs associated with growing burden of mental ill health, directs to create awareness on mental health and treating mental illness. WHO defines mental health as mental well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. The portal provides information related to this vital health aspect that is drawing attention at present. CTD conducted or organize school based health programmes in entire Tarakeswar Block on the theme of HIV/AIDS, Mental Health, Health as a broader perspective based on the definition of WHO, and other related hygienic issues. The organization conducted these programs with the close collaboration, networking and coordination of school authority, Tarakeswar Rural Hospital, Tarakeswar Panchayat Samity and other concern stake holders. CTD also conducted or organize so many awareness campaigning on the other two major issues like Malaria control and Management and Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program with the collaboration, coordination and networking with Tarakeswar Rural Hospital and Indian Medical Association, Tarakeswar Branch. This basic awareness program or advocacy program conducted by CTD within all the Panchayet areas withinTarakeswar Block. CTD also organized so many general awareness programs on First Aid in the same community within Tarakeswar Block with the coordination and collaboration of India Red Cross Society, Kolkata. Women Health Women health is very important thorough out her life, from puberty to menopause. Adolescent health, pregnancy, and reproductive tract health are the major areas of concern where care needs to be taken. In this portal information is provided for safe motherhood and care for good reproductive tract health. Child Health Children and Newborns, Growth and development, achieving mile stones, vaccination, care during illness, nutrition etc play a big role in child health. Children are vulnerable to malnutrition and infectious diseases. Healthy growth and development need to be supported with proper care to prevent malnutrition and infectious diseases. Each phase of child as a new born, infant, toddler and school going age needs special attention and care to protect and prevent diseases and to optimize the growth and development to their full potential. The portal provides information about all these topics. Sanitation and Hygiene A holistic definition of sanitation includes safe drinking water, liquid and solid waste management, environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene. The portal provides information on these topics of importance. CTD organized so many awareness programs or advocating campaigning on Sanitation and Hygiene to keep healthy, physically fitness, keep sanitized environment and to make disease free atmosphere.
Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition – an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity – is a cornerstone of good health. The portal provides information related to dietary guidelines, foods and their nutritional values, nutrition concepts and tips and much more. CTD worked with the under-5 years children along with pregnant women and nursing mothers to advocate on the basic concept on nutrition education along with the directly implemented the activity for attitude or behavior changes of the mothers regarding the nourishment of the malnourished children named “Positive Deviance Hearth Program” (PD/Hearth Program). This is an innovative approach to change the attitude or beheaviour of the mothers for taking care of the children or infants to become a nourished child. This is an activity for the 12 days programme with the mothers of malnourished children and selected nourished children as a role model through the health education and nutritious recipe demonstration by the mothers with the help of facilitator by the using of locally available vegetables and other materials. This is approaches that with the maximum utilization of the local resources and with the very short span of time how the malnourished child may become nourished and healthy. Apart from this a long term follow up program was conducted for retain the growth and development of the children. CTD total covered approx 25000 malnourished children along with their mothers and other stake holders in some blocks like Tarakeswar, Pursurah, Jangipara, Pandooah and Dhaniakhali Block in the District of Hooghly. With the implementation of this program CTD got networked with all Block officials in the concern Blocks and ICDS Department in all concern Blocks where the organization implemented these programs. Apart from this CTD conducted or organized some awareness programs to advocate nutrition concept among the community people especially for the mothers and children into the entire community.

CTD is implementing school safety programs with 15 Schools in Tarakeswar Block. Safety of children has direct linkage with achieving educational outcomes and well-being of children. This programme offer aims to achieve comprehensive safety for school children within and outside the school (from home to school and back). The process to achieve this objective is led by children at school level with active participation of teachers and SMC members.In order to achieve comprehensive safety, the programme offer focuses on two key elements viz. a) undertaking school safety planning at school level and b) advocating with the government and other key stakeholders for effective implementation of school safety agenda as enshrined in the school safety policy 2016. The first element will involve children as leaders and build their capacity towards their safety while the second element focuses on the implementation and replication of successful school safety model at large. To make a safe learning environment CTD, ChildFund India Project has been taken some initiatives to resolve the safety related issues in schools like Risk analysis with the involvement of children , strengthening capacity and to make aware of the SMC/PTA/Teachers on the entire concept on school safety, restructuring of task Force team in each school and their capacity building through the comprehensive training, provided emergency safety kits to meet up any type of emergency needs in school, to resolve the safe drinking water issue through the installation of running water facilities in schools, recover the risk areas identified by children through the mitigation activities and strengthen the activity in school through the District Level Consultation program through advocacy workshop and to make transparency and to publish and disseminate the program through making school safety plan etc. Other Achievements

INITIATIVE OF SPONSORSHIP PROJECT As of now CTD have 18 children clubs, 6 youth clubs and 12 adolescent clubs. They are in the process of streamlining to get the overall ideas on various social problems, issues identification, and importance to form these clubs, their roles and responsibilities. Through the other life stages regular activities they are in process to strengthening their capacity, skill building, confident building and positive responses with the implementation of various child/ youth related activities. As a leadership development and its practical implication, in the last year some of our children and youth club members are exclusively organised and celebrated Sponsor’s day, Alumni Meet with Annual Performance Day and various National Days. Children and youth club members took initiative and they organised these programmes based on the process of from drafted planning to program execution and its evaluation. They have show case their excellent performances through the implementation of these various activities. They organised Rally, Seminar, Quiz Contest, Debate Competition, Sit and Draw Competition, Poster Preparation time to time. All the enrolled children and youth along with their sibling and few community children and youth were actively involved and participated in these activities. To retain the good impact related to SR activities and its continuous follow up CTD formed First Year Retention Group (FYRG). In the last year two time meeting was organised with all the members of this group for sharing the latest and update status of SR related activities in the entire project area. As a result members of FYRG took some positive initiative to follow up the letter writing by the children, RAM and DPL update and its follow up, Child regularise in the program and activities, proper communication with the sponsor etc. They have to follow up the regular child meet and there the discussion on sponsorship, documents properly keeping at the child’s home, child himself or herself are aware on his/her sponsor details etc. They have to interact with the children, youths regularly at their own villages or hamlets. Gradually awareness and impact of sponsorship is improving in the community. Total 9 Emergency Cases has been supported and they have been recovered.
TI PROJECT Under the umbrella of CTD, one of the important projects is Targetted Intervention (T.I.) Project. Since February 2010 this project is being implemented in partnership with West Bengal State AIDS Prevention & Control Society, under the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal. The T.I. project is being implemented to prevent & control HIV/AIDS among the Female Sex Workers Tarakeswar, Champadanga and newly included Arambagh area. So we are working among 300 Female Sex Workers (FSW), some of them are Brothel based and rest are flying, they are coming from neighborhood or from different place of Hooghly district

Providing Skills for life Providing vocational and life skills (age 15-24) As children become young adults and prepare to take on bigger responsibilities, their education needs become vastly different. CTD helps them become ready for this stage of their life by providing life skills training that eases this transition. Our interventions also empower and equip students with vocational and professional skills. At this juncture, we focus with more intensity on the higher education of girls from marginalized, tribal and hilly communities through a scholarship programme, helping them take on advanced courses. We also provide vocational training and functional literacy for illiterate women and girls in the community.
General Department During the year 2017-18 CTD developed a project of ‘Vidya Utkarsh” (An Education Project) with the collaboration and support of ACC Cement India Ltd. This project is on the pipeline. CTD developed a linkage with WTL (Webel Technology Limited) to run the course of 1 year Basic Computer Application for the students of the community. Total 86 students are continuing their course under WTL. CTD is implemented a project with Banipur Mahila Mahavidyalaya NSS Unit on Education at Jigra Primary School through the implementation of programs like wall painting of the classroom to ensure joyful learning method towards children, provided school bags to the children, organized awareness programs on child rights, education and environmental issue and also set up some street lights in a part of jigra village. CTD implemented another project named “Kishori Shakti Yojana” (KSY) with the networking/collaboration of Govt ICDS Department through the organizing of Beautician Training for 25 adolescents girls at Tarakeswar.
